At Oma’s
History of the house
It is no longer possible to determine exactly when the original house was built. In any case, it was built in the 1950s and initially served as a residential building. In the following years, it was extended to the left and right of the main building and was used by the Müther company as its administrative headquarters from the 1970s to the 1990s.
During the GDR era, this construction company was internationally renowned for its hypar shell construction method (Binz Rescue Tower, Warnemünde “Teepott”, Baabe “Island Paradise”, Tripoli Planetarium and many more).
In 1999, the construction company went bankrupt. The insolvency administrator divided up the entire property, which until then had also included the area of today’s beverage market and Netto, and offered it for sale.
I applied to purchase the smaller plot of land with the residential building and was awarded the contract at the beginning of 2000. At last I was able to combine all the premises I needed and had previously rented in one place.
Although the previous owner was a construction company, the entire building had to be completely and extensively renovated. An apartment, an office, two vacation apartments and the Klosterschenke as a private meeting place for guests were created.
In 2007, an unused room that used to be the canteen of the construction company was converted and furnished as a small restaurant.
“Grandma’s kitchen” had been created.
In summer, there was a small terrace in front of the house with three tables and parasols. When it rained, the guests stood in the dining room with their plates, which was usually full. This was not a satisfactory situation for either guests or service staff.
The idea of building a roof came to me at a friend’s birthday party when, during a sudden thunderstorm, some of the guests were sitting under a sheltered roof and the others had to flee from a tent because it couldn’t withstand the rain. In August 2008, the terrace was covered with a wooden structure that was still open at the front.
The restaurant was always busy, which led to the staff being increased in 2013 and the kitchen and warehouse being expanded in 2014, although the open kitchen remained unchanged so that guests could continue to watch their food being prepared.
In 2017, the patio roof was installed and heated. A reception area, four more cozy parlors and the extraordinary saloon car with locomotive were created.
Since 2020, the hotel has been run by ‘Omas Küche Binz Gastronomiegesellschaft mbH’. The main shareholder, Klaus Pede, takes care of the commercial matters and contributes his experience as senior site manager, most recently in the remodelling of the toilets.

At Granny’s Kirchen and Quartier in Binz, the focus is on people – and this is reflected in our team. We are proud of the fact that we do not have “employees” working for us, but committed staff who put their heart and soul into their work. Many of them have been part of our family for years, some even since the very first days of our company.
Our restaurant management ensures that every visit to Grandma’s Kitchen is an unforgettable experience, while the hotel management does everything it can to make your stay with us as pleasant as possible. Together we form a team that is characterized by many years of cooperation and mutual trust.
